General Information
The Oak Ridges Moraine was formed about 12,000 years ago by advancing and retreating glaciers. They left a series of rolling hills and river valleys stretching from the Niagara Escarpment to Rice Lake. This moraine is considered to be one of the most significant landforms in southern Ontario. Around here it is just known as the “Ridge”. The Oshawa Cycling Club and our two local bike shops, Impala Bicycles and Bicycles Plus, have joined together and pooled our experience to present a ride through the quiet back roads that crisscross the ridge and highlight its many features. You will see stunning vistas along with small creeks and lakes as you climb through these hills. There are many small villages along the way as well. We also found a few flat roads where you can catch your breath as we take you all the way from the ridge down to the shore of Lake Ontario and back. We have developed four different routes which we think will provide a place on the road for everyone. We invite you to join us on this ride in support of the United Way and come and see for yourself, what we consider to be some of the finest cycling roads in southern Ontario.
The "Ride4UnitedWay" event stretches from Oshawa on the west, as far north as Port Perry, east to Newtonville and south along Lake Ontario. This area encompasses parts of the Oak Ridge Moraine and is geographically hilly. Please take that into consideration when you are selecting which route you plan to ride.
