2009

The first annual Ride4UnitedWay was a great success, even though the weather wasn't exactly cooperative. It was an unusually cool day for August with temperatures barely climbing above 15 degrees. It was an awe inspiring sight as the 300+ riders left the UOIT campus in a rolling mass start as they headed out onto their respective routes. The riders had to battle headwinds on the home stretch of over 25 kph and even a bit of drizzle. Nothing seemed to dampen their spirits though. Many thanks to all who participated. Also, many thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors who donated their time and products. Without the sacrifices of these people this ride would not have been the success it was. Check out the gallery for some photos from the day.

We hope to see everyone at next year's 2010 Ride4UnitedWay. Bring some friends with you!!

2009 Rider Comments

"It was my first experience at an organized ride and overall it was a great experience.

What I liked.
Very organized
Easy to register (web)
Format was good, the 160 k group in the front, the shorter routes behind it.
Start was nice, no bunch up or chaos. Police escort for the first 5 km.
Marshalls on each turn directing you.
Police at major intersections holding traffic( this is a tremendous help) and really improves the safety.
Swag rider to bring up the rear.
United Way volunteers welcoming you at the finish line with a gift bag
Refreshments
Sue enjoyed the massage immensely.

What was missing
When I registered it mentioned there would be water and light snacks on the route.
On the 40k route I did not see any indication of a water/snack station.
Fortunately we brought water but didn't bring any snacks thinking we would grab them enroute. We were pretty hungry when we finished the 40 km.

All in all, a great experience we will definitely repeat next year.

Thx for all your hard work. You did a tremendous job as always."

"I participated in the ride today, I did the 115km route. Just wanted to let you know how great I thought it was. You all did a fantastic job organizing the event, I hope you make this an annual thing."

Thanks, W.L.

"My husband & I completed the 88km (actually 93 from start at campus, but who's counting?) Yes it was challenging but all roads were well marked & those with actual people made it impossible to get lost. The many police officers made crossing major intersections very safe. We enjoyed our burgers & have just looked through our goody bags. Free massages were wonderful. We do have a couple of suggestions for next year (we'll be there):"

"Thank you for a great job. Couple of minor issues with signage but overall very enjoyable if very hilly. That is not something that you have control over. The roads were mostly good and the traffic was light. I think I am looking forward to next year. Will have to see how long it takes to recouperate.

Again thanks to all the people involved in supporting the event and to the sponsors."

Great job H.K
.

"Just wanted to say thanks and congrats on a great job yesterday. The riders in my group were all very happy and it seemed like everything went off without a hitch! I completed the 115k ride and it was very picturesque. I ride with clip on's - but I haven't for long - anyway, the whole 115k ride went great UNTIL I got back into the campus at the final stop sign. I didn't unclip in time and did the classic slow and steady fall to the left while still clipped into my bike....of course his was in front of lots of onlookers and the goodie bag volunteers.....LOL....I guess I left my brain at the last rest stop :)

Thanks for all your hard work - looking forward to next year. Let me know how I can get involved - anything I can do to promote the UW, fitness and our community is my top priority!

P.S can we have MORE hills next year.......JOKING!"
